Here is a brief overview of how the hunting camp is run.
Colorado scenerySafety: Safety in hunting and traveling is of the utmost importance. Hunting in the mountains can be more difficult then hunting on flat or rolling land. Shooting distances can be farther, terrain can be steep and footing can be bothersome and the higher altitude can affect a hunter's ability to move around. The day prior to the hunt, we all sit down and go over what we will be doing.

It is recommended to drink plenty of water prior to your arrival. Once in camp, it's important to continue drinking ample amounts of water. There is good quality water at the ranch, so no need to bring any along.

We primarily use ATV's which the hunters provide for their own use. Again, driving in the mountains is much different than on flatter terrain. Our camp is at 7,200 feet and we hunt up to 9,200 feet. The majority of the usage will be on trails. Helmets are recommended, but not necessary. Watching your speed, especially coming down a mountain trail is very important.

We recommend shooting your rifle up to 300 yards. Even though, most of the shots will be closer, it might be necessary for a longer shot. If you have a range finder, that would help in establishing distances. We will plan on going to a rifle range in Colorado the day prior to your hunt, to verify your rifle is shooting accurately.

The Hunt:
We go out at daybreak and plan on hunting throughout the day. The majority of hunting is stand hunting and the vantage points we have for the stands has proven over the years to be the best locations. There can be some hiking in steep terrain or you can drive your ATV relatively close to the area you will be hunting. This is determined once everyone is in camp. Breakfast in the morning, pack a lunch and some beverages and go out for the day. At night we have ample dinner.

For bulls, there is a 4-point antler restriction. 4 points on one side or a 5" brow tine on one side makes for a legal bull. Processing is available locally and we try and get the animals to the locker plant as soon as possible to prevent spoilage. The meat can be cut and wrapped to the hunter's individual needs. The butchers work very well with you. Once an animal is harvested, if help is needed on getting it out, we all pitch in to help. Makes it a lot easier for packing an animal out if the need arises.

There is NO party hunting in Colorado.

Camp Chores: Everyone shares camp chores. Whether it's cooking, cleaning or carrying firewood, all hands help out. If you can't cook, then you can volunteer to do dishes. This way everyone has a helping hand in camp. Shoes are taken off outside, so it is recommended to bring some house slippers or shoes. We want to keep the mud and dirt out of the cabin. We have hot water, shower, toilet, stove, refrigerator, microwave and wood heat stove. There is no smoking in the bunkhouse.

Food:
Your food is included in the cost of the hunt. If you'd like to bring something to camp to share, make sure it's enough for 8 people.

Physical Conditioning: Most hunting is at least somewhat physical. Steep mountain terrain and high altitude can affect you in many ways. We recommend doing some walking and hiking prior to your hunt. Good conditioning will pay off once in camp.

We willl go over all this once you get to Colorado. Also, I'll be providing a map as to the location of the ranch. We will either meet at the ranch or at a designated area in Meeker or Craig. I'll let you know on that.

Your Colorado elk hunting experience will be an enjoyable time. The scenery is awesome, the weather can be variable, the excitement can overwhelm you as well as the frustrations. One main objective is for all to have a safe and enjoyable hunting experience.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at any time.

I'm looking forward to hunting with you this fall.
